There’s a little rock in my kitchen window
Looks like a potato in the morning sun
I put it there to make a promise
Back when having enough was never a given
I said, “Someday this house will be different
Someday no one here will go without”
Kept that promise where I could see it
Kept a little hope when the lights went out
Then somewhere between the charts and the laughter
We gave another potato its name
I don’t know who said it first, but after
Nothing ever sounded quite the same
Oh, the potato went to the moon
Can you believe how far it grew?
From a rock in the window to a sky full of room
The potato went to the moon
Now there’s time to sit with the ones we love
And enough to pass around
We can change a life, we can lift one up
With both feet on the ground
Oh, the potato went to the moon
I used to dream of a full kitchen table
Now I dream of who else gets a chair
Bear says, “Look at you, making plans again”
I say, “Honey, we can finally get there”
A little less worry in the morning
A little more yes when somebody calls
Take care of our people while we’ve got them
Make some good and watch it travel on
And that rock still catches the sunlight
Right where it’s always been
I touch it when I’m making breakfast
And remember what I promised then
Oh, the potato went to the moon
Can you believe how far it grew?
From a rock in the window to a sky full of room
The potato went to the moon
Now there’s time to sit with the ones we love
And enough to pass around
We can change a life, we can lift one up
With both feet on the ground
Oh, the potato went to the moon
For the kid who had to find her own supper
Here’s a plate, and you can take your time
For the people who helped me get here
Come on in—the porch light’s shining
I’ll keep that rock in the window
However high this thing may fly
So I remember where the promise started
When I’m looking at the sky
Oh, the potato went to the moon
Can you believe how far it grew?
From a rock in the window to a sky full of room
The potato went to the moon
Now there’s time to sit with the ones we love
And enough to pass around
We can change a life, we can lift one up
With both feet on the ground
Oh, the potato went to the moon
Look at that little potato go
I promised we would always eat
Now everybody gets a seat
