Ingredients
- Use an OLD teapot – it’ll get sticky with sap and never be the same. I have a pine tea only pot, separate from my regular teapot, purchased from goodwill.
- 1 handful fresh pine needles
- bring to boil, remove from heat, cover, and let steep.
- Return to low heat and simmer for at least 15-20 minutes, keeping the lid on to retain the essential oils.
Health Benefits of Pine Needle Tea
Pine needle tea has a rich history in Native American and Asian cultures, often noted in memoirs and traditional medicine texts.
1. Rich in Vitamin C
Pine needle tea contains 4-5 times more vitamin C than orange juice, making it a traditional remedy for scurvy. Studies show its antioxidant activity is similar to that of vitamin C, providing immune support and overall vitality.
2. Vision Health
Packed with vitamin A, this tea supports eye health and protects aging eyes from environmental pollutants.
3. Respiratory Support
Traditionally, pine needle tea was used as an expectorant and decongestant, easing respiratory discomfort.
4. Aiding Weight Management
Studies suggest that pine needle tea helps in managing weight similarly to green and black tea by supporting a healthy metabolism.
5. High in Antioxidants
Research shows pine needle tea has a high level of antioxidants, which fight free radicals, support cell health, and protect DNA.
6. Heart Health
The tea’s anti-inflammatory properties can support cardiovascular health by preventing oxidative damage.
7. Cognitive Support
Early studies indicate that pine needle tea helps improve memory and cognitive function by protecting neural connections.
Connection Between Suramin and Pine Needle Tea
Suramin, originally derived from pine oil, has a long history as an effective treatment for various infections and conditions. Although prescription Suramin is available only by injection, pine needle tea offers a natural way to harness Suramin’s properties. Pine needles, rich in phytonutrients, provide a range of benefits that go beyond isolated compounds, supporting whole-body health.
Pine essential oil (not medical advice, use your own discretion)
Although experts will constantly warn you about ingesting essential oils, I (Kitty) regularly – as often as daily in “flu” season – add 2-3 drops of straight pine essential oil to my coffee or tea with no ill effects. I’m also not getting sick while everyone around me is miserable. I swear by it for myself & buy my essential oils from BulkApothecary.com (no affiliation, I just like their products and prices)
